How many Rocky movies are there? Breaking down film franchise, from 'Rocky' to 'Creed III'

A good underdog story can go a long way. For those who go to the movies, the magic of film reels you in and allows you to forget your surroundings. At that moment, you are rooting for the underdog, joining them on their journey from the bottom of the totem pole to the top of the mountain.

Since 1976, the Rocky franchise has told the story of the underdog who reached the literal and figurative top of the steps of life. That story has now been transferred over from Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa to Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed.

A new generation of boxing fans now has a chance to share the experience their parents felt all those years ago.

Creed 3, directed by Jordan, arrives in theaters on March 3. The plot of the film states: "When a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy resurfaces, the face-off between former friends is more than just a fight.” Jonathan Majors, having a busy 2023 thanks to his role as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, will play Damian Anderson, the friend of Jordan’s Creed.

It is the third installment of the Creed franchise. It is also the ninth film of the Rocky universe, and the first that does not include Stallone’s Rocky. If everything goes according to plan, there will be more Adonis Creed moments on the big screen.

“Building the Creed universe is something that I’m really excited about,” Jordan told Deadline at a Creed 3 red carpet event.

A seventh Rocky film is something Stallone has an interest in. As of now, it is not greenlit. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Stallone provided details of the film.

"Rocky was back trying to fight for the neighborhood that made him and that he still loves," Stallone stated via Collider. He also brought up Rocky witnessing a 27-year-old named "Chucho the Mutt" training. That part may have teased another mentor role for Rocky.
