Tonya Harding is a former American figure skater. She won gold at the 1991 U.S. World Championships in Minneapolis. Her professional figure skating career ended in 1994 after she was implicated in the attack on Nancy Kerrigan at the Olympic trials. She has since experimented with celebrity boxing, painting, and other miscellaneous gigs. Tonya Maxene Harding was born on November 12, 1970, in Portland, Oregon. Her parents were LaVona Golden and Albert Harding. She had a half-brother named Chris Davidson. Harding attended Milwaukie High School but dropped out her sophomore year. She later completed her GED.
CAREER
Harding began skating at the early age of 3. She was coached/mentored by Diane Rawlinson and later Dody Teachman (1991-92). Harding began competing at the international level in the mid-1980s. She won gold at the 1990 and 1992 Skate America figure skating competitions. She won the Prize of Moscow News (1989), and the Nations Cup (1990). Harding won the gold medal at the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She became the first American female to complete the triple axel at an international event (1991 World Championships). In 1992, Harding finished 4th at the Winter Olympics, 3rd at the U.S. Championships, and 6th at the World Championships. She finished in 8th place at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Harding’s career took a turn for the worst after she was implicated in the 1994 attack on fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan. She entered a plea bargain which prevented her from going to jail. Harding was slapped with a lifetime ban from competing in the United States. Her 1994 U.S. Championships gold medal was also stripped by the President of the U.S. Figure Skating Association.
Outside of skating, Harding has appeared on a number of television programs. She has been featured on shows like Larry King Live, The Weakest Link, World’s Dumbest, Good Morning America, and Rosanne. She had a small role as “Gina” in the film, Breakaway (1996). Harding competed as a professional boxer from 2003 to 2004. Her record stands at 3 wins and 3 losses. She bested Paula Jones in a 2002 episode of Fox’s Celebrity Boxing. The black comedy biographical film, I, Tonya, was released in 2017.
