InterExchange Au Pair USA offers young adults from around the world the unique opportunity to live and work in the United States as an au pair for up to two years. Au pairs participate on a 12-month program with the option to extend for 6, 9 or 12 months.
What is an au pair?
An au pair is a caring live-in child care provider between the ages of 18 and 26 who lives as an extended member of a host family in exchange for room, board and a small stipend. In addition to providing child care, an au pair's responsibilities may also include:
* dropping the children off at school
* picking them up from school or after-school activities
* helping with homework
* assisting in keeping the children's rooms clean
* cooking light meals for the children
While an au pair's first priority is to provide child care for the host family's children, au pairs have plenty of free time to make the most of their time in the U.S. Au pairs receive a $500 USD credit for taking educational classes at local schools and also participate in monthly meetings and activities planned with other au pairs in their community.
J-1 Visa Sponsorship from an Experienced Organization
* Au pairs are sponsored by InterExchange for a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa, which permits work in the United States as an au pair.
Carefully Screened Host Families
* Host families are carefully screened and interviewed and are aware of the benefits of participating in a cultural exchange experience. By participating in their host family's life, au pairs can gain valuable insight into the American culture while improving their English language skills.
Au Pair Social Events
* Au pairs attend monthly meetings organized by Local Coordinators. Meetings can be informational, cultural or educational in nature, and are a great way to meet other au pairs. Meetings can include holiday parties, museum trips, concerts, sporting events, volunteer projects, travel opportunities, charity walks or guest speakers.
Orientation and Training Program in New York City
* Au pairs participate in a one-week Orientation and Training Program in New York City prior to traveling to their host families. In addition to seminars on child development and child health and safety issues, au pairs will learn about life in the United States and how to adjust to a new culture. The rules and regulations of the J-1 visa and the health insurance program are explained and there is time to explore the city too.
Spending Money, Free Room and Board, Paid Vacation and Time Off
* Au pairs are provided with a weekly stipend determined by the U.S. Department of State for 51 weeks, a private room, meals, an education allowance, two weeks' paid vacation, one and a half days off per week and at least one complete weekend off each month during the year.
Travel Arrangements, International Airfare and Accident and Sickness Insurance Included
* Roundtrip international airfare to the United States and Accident & Sickness Insurance is included as part of the program.
Educational Allowance for Classes
* Au pairs enroll in classes, taking the equivalent of six credit hours for the year. The program includes a 500 USD per year credit to use toward the Educational Component of the program.
Optional Month to Travel Within the United States
* After successfully completing the program, au pairs may travel throughout the United States for one month before returning home.
